Alaska Smokehouse

I don’t know whether to kow-tow in awe or cry with inadequacy. Just got off the phone with a good friend from college. We worked in the campus cafeteria together for three years. Our favorite pastime was to stand by the food grinder and watch it transform perfectly good salad bar fixins into mushy sludge. Sanitation standards prevented food from leaving the building, no matter how much was leftover. But me in my bad-ass maroon apron? I smuggled the goods out anyway.

My friend never did—she was always a better person. When she was 23, she founded Puentes, a nonprofit organization that supports Peruvian street children. Now she’s a medical resident at Harvard specializing in both internal medicine and pediatrics. When I asked her what she was doing this weekend, she told me she was camping up in Andover. Camping, I said, how fun! I was about to spout off my Redwood Creek Recipe (oh pride) but then she said, “well not camping exactly. We’re actually setting up a practice refugee camp. It’s part of this humanitarian program-- they're teaching us how to build relief centers.”

Then she asked what was new with me. Felt sort of weird to say that the big news in my day was that I got scolded by the Rabbi because someone (not me, I swear) had put a loaf of coffeecake next to the photocopy machine during Passover. So I said, "not much," and wondered if my life could have been any different if I was the kind of person who chose not to steal pasta salad from the college cafeteria…
