I forgot how delicate kids are. We were making cookies at work, 12 batches of cookies. There were 15 kids helping me. One of them, a quiet girl who was taller than the rest asked me what else she could do. The littler children were painting sugar cookies made out of rainbow colored frosting, and I think she felt too old for it. So I asked her to help remove hot cookies from a tray with a spatula. She burned herself almost instantly and stepped back without speaking a word. I took over, but when I looked back, she had tears all over her face.“Oh sweetie!” I said, and then remembered a babysitter who used to call me “hon” and how much I hated that, because I didn’t like someone I didn’t know that well being affectionate with me. So I got the girl some ice and didn’t call her sweetie again.
