Rooster knows that if he asks me directly to go jogging when I’m lying in bed and moping that he will get a less than positive response. So he has resorted to new tactics. Now he gives me a hug, tells me I’m a superstar, and then puts on his weird biker shorts even though it is still 32-degrees out.“I’m going for a short run,” he says. “I’ll be back real soon and we can talk more.”
“You’re going outside?” I ask (sniff sniff)
“Yep.” On goes his fleece warm up jacket and knit hat.
“What route?”
“The back way,” he says. Rooster knows I hate jogging around other human beings.
“Maybe I’ll come,” I say, not stirring one smudge from under the covers.
“It’s pretty cold out,” he says, and ties his sneakers.
“I’m coming,” I say, and sit up.
“Suit yourself,” he says.
Once outside I tell him that reverse psychology won’t work every time and he better stop counting on it to pull me out of a contest-envy funk whenever one hits. He just grins like a maniac.
“Maybe you should see a life coach,” he suggests. When grilled about what exactly this means, he says he thinks I can benefit from a professional helping me figure out what it is I want from life. "Someone to help you discover the path to your goals," he says.
Cue indignant shriek. After that, it was a pretty short jog home.
