There’s a toothless lady who I hug every Friday night at work. She comes to all our dinners and sneaks leftover food into her purse at the end of the meal. During the Chanukah dinner, she went from table to table after the other guests had left and collected remaining chicken pieces: fork to purse, fork to purse.
So this lady is on our list to get a Chanukah Box chock full of holiday ingredients every year. Last night she was distraught because she says she didn’t get a chicken in her box. Just carrots and potatoes. I apologized, but explained that all the food had been distributed at this point. She wouldn’t take no for an answer and made quite a fuss in the stairway. I ended up walking away from her—which I never do.
I don’t know why her behavior upset me so much. It shouldn’t. But all the holiday boxes had a chicken in them. They were all hand delivered, and they were all complete. And then there's the little issue of my groceries, and my co-workers groceries, which we have in the past, stored in the work fridge. They have gone missing. The security guards who have access to our video cameras think my toothless friend orchestrated the heist.
I know she needs the food. I don't begrudge her that. But when it comes to the Chanukah Boxes, I guess I just don't like people fibbing over chickens. Especially when with a little creativity she could stretch her "purse" chicken pretty darn far.
