Quick & Simple In Love

When Rooster became a Bar Mitzvah back in the mid-80’s, he was sure that when it was over he was going to get lucky. Alas, the chicks of the day were not throwing down. And Rooster was crushed.

So there I was, last Saturday morning in a more modern, but no less awkward Bat (for a girl) Mitzvah. From my chair, I could see into the hallway where a young teen in a tight green collard shirt walked past a rack of prayer shawls. He backtracked, stood looking at the shawls, then crouched down and straightened them so that their tassels were aligned. Nodding once to himself, he paused a moment longer before reluctantly edging back into the sanctuary.

As I watched him, it struck me that he might be gay. Something about the way he moved; that tight green shirt, and his rendezvous with the prayer shawls. I hoped that if he was, he wouldn’t have too hard a time coming out. It is tough being 13 and thinking that the junior high school world is the one that you’re stuck with. I wanted to tell him not to worry, that just like Rooster, the one who will win his heart is out there somewhere…
