Last week in Indiana, Rooster and I stopped at the train station to pick up a couple of visiting friends, and ended up deep in conversation with two local teens. They were brothers. Steven had a blonde crew cut and big pink lips. He walked right up to us and extended his hand. His fingernails were black with dirt along the edges. In one breath he told us that their aunt was coming in from Chicago and that he had lived in a special home for children with ADD for 8 months, but now he was out. His other brother, not the one with him now, was living in a mental home. Then he called the brother who was with him over, and told him to tell us about himself.
“My name is John. I’m 12 years old. My other brother is in a mental home.” “I told them that already,” said Steven.
Then Steven told us that when John was in his biological mother’s “stomach,” their biological father punched her. “While she was pregnant?” I asked. "Yep." Then the train came and their aunt got off. They gave her a purple flower that they had picked from beside the train tracks and walked away.
The above photo is of our two friends getting off the train. Rooster refused to take a sneaky picture of John and Steven. He thought it would be intrusive. He's so good.
