What to take away from this contest: Sappy trumps humor and what is an anti-athlete supposed to do with $300 worth of sports wear?
The Assignment: Write 100 words about your ultimate mountain gathering involving food, friends and wine. Sponsored by a winery and a winter sports store.
First Prize: An all expense paid ski-trip to Colorado for four
Second Prize: A winter sports-lover’s gift basket
Entry #1 (2nd Prize Win): I’m selective when it comes to wine, the friends I drink it with and the food I pair with each glass. Privacy and quiet are necessary when enjoying wine—and what better place to savor a fine bottle than in the snow smothered mountains. I don’t need ice wine to thrill in the wintertime—just vibrant fruit flavors and a depth that makes me leap from the ski jump, taste buds singing.
Entry #2 (No Win): I’m not good at traditional mountain getaways. Skiing I’m sure is a marvelous rush, but not for those of us who were force-clicked into runners and pushed down a hill by our overzealous father when we were young. Still I love the mountains. I love staying safe behind double thick glass while my friends write “scaredy cat” in two-foot-tall letters in the snow. All day I dally in the kitchen, sipping from a glass of Cabernet while my sausage stew simmers. When my friends return ravenous from skiing, I’m ready for them, serving spoon and wine bottle in hand.
