The Entry: The Wine-lover of Oz

For a Midwestern oenophile like me, traveling to Napa is like traveling to the Emerald City . I know that once I’m there I’ll find the wisdom of more than a century of wine making, the courage of committed vintners, the hearts of passionate wine lovers, and the feel of a magical place that is miles away, and yet still feels like home.

I want to travel to Napa Valley so I’m not just learning about viticultural diversity—I’m standing in it, breathing it, tasting it. From Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Franc, from Pinot Noir to Zinfandel, the variation in the Napa Valley appellation puts even the Médoc and the Côte d'Or to shame. If I could conjure my very own tornado, I’d ask it to drop me in Napa Valley so I could taste the whole array from start to finish.

I long to clink two ruby red glasses together and fly away from the winter grey Midwest and into Technicolor Napa. Once there, perhaps I’ll learn that the wizard lives in a barrel—either oak or stainless steel. This is Napa Valley after all; from soil to microclimate to aging, each bottle carries its own acclaim.
