Last Friday I asked for a girl’s phone number and she said no.
There I am, sitting at a tiny table at the new tapas place down the street. The Bachelor is to my left and Rooster is to my right. Our waitress is lithe and sarcastic and The Bachelor says, “how about our waitress?” The Bachelor rarely says how about anyone, so I kick Rooster under the table, a cue to start flirting. We take all of her ordering recommendations even the crudo which consists of a single raw sea scallop balanced in a dish of lime juice ($10). Every time our waitress checks on our table Rooster gabs and The Bachelor smiles.
Half way through the meal, the flue closes in the kitchen's wood burning oven and the dining room fills up with smoke. Our waitress approaches in an all-my-tip-givers-are-fleeing panic. Rooster tells her we’re not going to abandon her, we’ll tough it out. She brings us three complimentary desserts and three glasses of sherry. We nag The Bachelor to get her digits but by the end of the night he hasn’t made a move.
As the men get their coats I sneak to the server-station and ask for the waitress. I tell her my friend is shy. I say I’m running interference and ask her if she’s seeing anyone. She gives the floor an embarrassed glance and says she is. That glance is familiar to me, I've done it myself on occassion and so I know she is lying. I say nothing to the boys but when Rooster and I go home, I confess.
"Did you specify which one of us wanted her number?" He asks. I think for a moment. I confided no names, no body details. "There you go," he said. "She thought you were trying to set her up with me." I realize he’s right. The Bachelor never said boo to her whereas my husband flirted all night long. What a foolish woman, rejecting my husband like that. The Chicken blushes with indignation...
